- Polaris currently stands close to the north celestial pole, the projection of Earth's rotational axis on the sky.
- Because of axial precession, the pole star changes over millennia. Polaris will not always be the north star.
- It is not a useful pole marker from much of the Southern Hemisphere.

Interpretation
Direction can be a fact of spin. That fact is local to latitude and to an epoch. Calling Polaris 'the' guiding star universalizes a northern, present-tense accident.
Mechanism
Known mathematical. The alignment is a consequence of Earth's axis and precession. No intention is required.
